Intro to Y12SR: The Yoga of 12 Step Recovery

The Yoga of 12-Step Recovery (Y12SR) is a relapse prevention program that was created as a holistic model to address the physical, mental and spiritual dis-ease of addiction. Informed by the latest research in neuroscience and trauma healing, Y12SR “connects the dots” by combining the ancient wisdom and somatic approach of yoga with the cognitive approach of the most well-known addictive recovery program in the world, the 12-step recovery model.

Y12SR’s sustainable recovery program is based in the yoga sutra 2.16 ~ “Future suffering can be avoided.” There is a solution. The path and purpose of yoga and the 12-step recovery program are similar and two-fold: freedom / emancipation (from suffering) and fulfillment (to skillfully navigate through the world while thriving in every area of life).

The OM Workshop – The Yoga of Sound, Breath, Resonance & Vibration

In a yoga class, one of the first opportunities for students to connect with their teacher is through a shared “OM” but how often do we pay as much attention to the details of this sound as we do to the nuance of asana? Leslie will deconstruct the phonetics of this complex, resonant, sacred vibration with a review of the phonetic map of the mouth embedded in the Sanskrit alphabet. He will lead students in a simple chanting practice to blend exploration of the relationship between sound, physical support and movement.

Present Power

The true purpose of asana is to begin the long process of training the mind in concentration in order to prepare the practitioner for meditation.  In other words, if you aren’t making an effort to pay attention in your asana classes, you aren’t practicing “yoga” and it isn’t abhyasa, or practice.  This master class, with renowned author and teacher, Beryl Bender, is an accessible, flowing balanced sequence of our most beloved yoga postures and all about paying attention and training the mind in concentration.  Experience deep focus on conscious breathing.  Link breath with movement from posture to posture, moment to moment, staying present as the practice unfolds. Distracted? Notice! Begin again.  Distracted? Notice! Begin again.  Gentle or vigorous - up to you.  Do what you can and be happy.

Hip and Low Back Health

This 90-minute workshop will investigate the dynamics of hip and lower back movement. They should move in concert. But we're often unaware of problems in the deeper layers until it's too late. We'll use movements in specific ways to uncover hidden joint rigidity and the fascia surrounding them. We want to catch the hidden problems now, so they don't become problems down the road! We'll look at typical "rules of posture" that could work against your spine and hips' long-term health and mobility. Most of all, you'll learn how to use your muscles to develop and maintain bone strength and joint health for life. In Avita Yoga shapes, we use the muscles to reach the bones. Give it a try. You'll love the freedom and peace you'll feel!

It's especially good if:

You have Chronic low back pain - from sitting, cycling, running, or hiking.
Hip pain wakes you up at night.
You've been diagnosed with arthritis or degeneration.
You are a yoga therapist or teacher wanting new ways to reach your students.
You want a way to maintain healthy hips and spine…for life!

Kula Flow: Strength & Stability

1-2 Blocks Highly recommended.

While I will never say “stretching is bad” (because it isn’t), there’s plenty of access to opening the body in this way within the yoga world. This class will tackle strength and stability, and while it won’t be a conditioning class, you will learn ways to create strength in your muscles and stability in your joints that you can apply to your current yoga practice, vinyasa or otherwise. It’s a modern approach to sthira sukha asana: strong but not rigid, pliable but not without stable boundaries. You will still flow! These workshop ideas will be taught within the context of a Kula Flow (vinyasa) structure.

Shushumna Nadi in Theory & Practice: The Central Pillar of Krishnamacharya's Yoga

An organizing principle of Krishnamacharya’s breath-centered approach to yoga theory and practice involves the opening of the central channel of the energetic body – the Shushumna Nadi.  Leslie’s uniquely anatomical and experiential perspective on this topic refers to this as “vertical axis integration.”  This session will explore this idea in a practice sequence that integrates asana, kriya, bandha, mudra, pranayama. Unlock Your Inner Voice with the Yoga of Voice

Prana moves through the body with breath. When we add the vibration of sound we amplify our ability to experience that prana. The result is that we feel more energized, enlivened and embodied. By activating the audible voice we awaken our ability to voice feelings, needs and our own truth. The more comfortable we become with our own sound the more comfortable we become expressing ourselves to the world. That is our right—and our responsibility. At this moment in time, it’s imperative. In this practice we’ll utilize breath, movement, asana, chanting and improvisational sound to cultivate a greater connection to the voice within and, therefore, to a greater sense of presence, power and peace.

Developing a Strong Spiritual Core

The latest neuroscience research shows that people with a strong "spiritual core" experience less anxiety and depression than those that don't. But what do we mean by a "strong spiritual core?" And how does yoga help someone develop it?

You'll often hear people say that yoga is "spiritual but not religious." Yet, it's not always clear what distinguishes one from the other or what either has to do with a breathing and moving practice.

In this workshop, J. Brown will offer simple practice and facilitate discussion around different philosophical viewpoints and the notion of a higher power in the context of yoga. This will include the relationship between meditation and prayer, soul and creator, intuition, and ways in which we might develop receptivity and direction.

Kula Flow: A Supple Psoas

(1-2 Yoga Blocks Highly Recommended)

Your psoas is major. It’s one of the few muscles that connects your upper and lower body, and specifically your leg limbs to your spine. It is responsible for helping (or disrupting!) functional movement and breath and is intricately connected to the emotional body via the nervous system. This class will build toward backbending and inner/outer hip opening, where you will explore other ways than the often used crescent lunge to create a supple set of psoas.

Tantra Yoga: Align with Nature’s Way and Yoga Nidra

Tantra means “loom,” like a weaver’s loom, where you weave back together the various threads of yourself –
body, mind, and heart with the infinite, unbounded, universal spirit. Tantra is the recognition that you are
already enough and worthy just as you are. Practice a sequence of gentle asanas (standing poses, hip openers,
twists, and forward bends) leading to Yoga Nidra (yogic sleep), a deep, guided, ecstatic relaxation perfect for
ending your day.
During this class, you
  •  Align with nature’s way through the five elements (Earth, Water, Fire, Air, and Sky)
  •  Quiet the mind and cultivate deep inner peace through Yoga Nidra (yogic sleep)
  •  Receive hands-on adjustments to improve your alignment technique
  •  Release tension and stress and return home to your heart where you are already accepted and whole
  •  Enjoy Todd’s music throughout the class
Ashaya Yoga is an accessible, therapeutic, and safe practice for all levels of beginners to advanced yogis.
Modifications are given and you’re encouraged to go at your own pace.

The Warrior Series - A Hands-Free Vinyasa Practice

If you like a strong, flowing, breath-centered yoga practice, but have done more than a few too many down dogs, up dogs and chaturangas, then this is the class for you. This practice-heavy workshop will lead you through a specially-designed vinyasa that strongly works the legs and moves the spine in all possible directions, all without putting any body weight on your hands.
This session can be extended into two parts, with part one focusing on the relationship of breath to movement, while introducing the basic movement principles of the sequence. Additionally, the use of breath cueing to achieve alignment and safety objectives will be covered through exploring individual adaptation and modification.
Building on the basics covered in part one, part two covers the full sequence of poses in the Warrior Series with an emphasis on the details of alignment. In particular, we will experiment with how to individualize breath and asana cueing for groups of any size, as well as how to modify the practice for individual therapeutic objectives. The vinyasa will be practiced twice, the first time flowing through non-stop, and the second time breaking down the myriad possibilities for individual adaptation.

The Yoga of the Foot: How To Be A Better Biped

As mammals of the genus homo, we have been walking erect for about 2 million years. Yet, in what amounts to an evolutionary blink of an eye, natural organic ground has literally been pulled out from under us, as we have leveled, paved, and otherwise smoothed out the unpredictable terrain our feet evolved upon. Add to this insult the injury of restrictive footwear and we in the industrialized world have an epidemic of physical ills that can be traced back to our compromised foundations.
This workshop will delve deeply into the history, structure, function and retraining of our feet as the foundation for a healthy asana practice and for living more fully functional lives as happy bipeds.

Yoga for Pain

Yoga practices can be used for different purposes. Some people use practice for fitness. Some people are looking for transcendence. But, more and more, people are coming to yoga to address their pain. It could be either physical or mental pain, usually both.

The way yoga practice helps us address pain is not the same way we might practice for other purposes. Many conventional approaches unsuccessfully attempt to do both and often leave students ill equipped to develop effective personal practice that meets their needs.

In this workshop, J will examine the distinguishing characteristics of yoga practice that is geared towards a lessening of pain and developing individual agency. We will identify both the technical and philosophical aspects that determine both the experience we have, and results we receive.

Mystical Yoga: The Path to Liberation Through Magick, Alchemy, and Ritual

Magick, often described as the art of channeling energy at will, is precisely what unfolds when we unite in movement, breath, and prayer within the realm of yoga.
In this transformative journey, our daily practice becomes an alchemical process wherein we transmute the confines of our body and mind into boundless expansion. It empowers us to transcend our limiting beliefs and transfigure the leaden weight of fear into the golden wisdom that resides within us.
As we engage in this potent and purposeful approach, yoga transcends mere exercise—it becomes a sacred ritual, a holy dance with the divine, a tangible expression of our devotion, and a cosmic act of service. It serves as an amplifier for our commitment to healing ourselves, one another, and our precious planet in our quest for peace.
Join me for a very special, powerful, and illuminating event, where we will harmonize our intentions and utilize the power of our bodies to awaken the energies that guide us toward wholeness and freedom.
This soul-stirring class will encompass a variety of practices, including sun salutations A and B, standing postures, backbends, forward bends, inversions, meditation, contemplation, mantra, mudra, and heartfelt prayer.

Four Tenets of Transformational Hands-On-Assists

This workshop is geared for yoga teachers or fitness professionals who work with individuals in group-class or one-on-one settings.
One of the main goals of yoga is to improve the flow of prana (energy or life-force) in the body. We use yoga asanas to help improve prana flow. Sometimes our students can’t access that state in their postures due to many factors.  A kind and compassionate hands-on-assist can facilitate the flow energy in the body by:
  • providing stability
  • creating grounding
  • creating space in the body
  • helping improve breath.
In this hands-on experiential workshop, we will learn the four main principles that will take your hands-on-assists to the next level and help your students experience postures in a whole new way.
We will learn to recognise when and where prana is restricted in the body in various asanas and learn the methods in which we can help improve prana flow with hands-on-assists. When prana is unlocked, the students can experience each pose in a more enjoyable, beneficial as well as more safe manner.
We will discuss student consent, approach, as well as how to use your hands with kindness and compassion for the health and wellness of your students. All of us are healers, we just need to fine-tune our senses and learn the power of our healing touch.

Welcome to Katonah Yoga® – a transformative journey rooted in Taoist theory, sacred geometry, and meaningful metaphors.

In our communal classes, we explore personal growth through pairs and groups, providing formal support with hands-on adjustments.

Katonah Yoga thrives on three universal principles: polarity, patterns, and repetition. Mediating between polarities, you'll harmonize body and mind, guided by the magic square of Taoist origin – a map to organize your personal abode, the body.

Approaching asana sequences as "workshops," we delve into each practitioner's unique proportions, ensuring alignment control and joint protection. Beyond the physical, Katonah Yoga® fosters a dialogue between postures, organs, and emotions, transcending habitual patterns for mind, body, and soul enrichment.

Cultivate a stable, safe, and sustainable practice during our time together. Master body proportions, assist others on their journeys, and integrate pranayama and Taoist meditations. This workshop will empower you to apply Katonah Yoga to any style, unlocking your full potential. Join us on this profound exploration of self-discovery and transformation.
