Healing Addiction: The Dis-ease of the Lost Self (Part 1)

Part 1 of 2:  Broadening the view of addiction
When we mistakenly look outward for what lies within, believing that happiness and fulfillment reside in external factors like people, places, things, education, behaviors, substances, or experiences, we are led down a path that ultimately results in darkness and disconnection. This detachment from our true selves, often due to trauma or unfulfilled needs, is not just a catalyst for addiction, eating disorders, and co-dependent behavior, but according to ancient yoga and Vedanta texts, it's also the fundamental cause of all suffering, including societal issues like racism, sexism, and gender-based discrimination. However, we don't need to endure or inflict suffering. We have the power to rediscover and embrace our authentic selves. This journey of self-reclamation involves returning to and embracing the aspects of ourselves that we have long neglected or hidden, with the goal of restoring the innate love, acceptance, and sense of belonging that is our inherent right. Lecture, Discussion, Embodiment practices.

Taoist Yoga & Philosophy for Awakening To True Nature

Taoist Yoga and Philosophy is an approach to life that seeks mind/body balance and recognizes that
everything is both sacred and dust at the same time. The body’s vitality(Jing/Jung) is sacred but will eventually die, one’s heart center and emotional life (Qi/Shim/Maum) is sacred but is bound to suffer, and one’s insight/mind/spirit/brain(Shen/Shin) is sacred but bound to be confounded by the mystery of existence… In this workshop you will learn how to integrate and harmonize these three energy centers of the body/mind as well as dive deep into the core Taoist concept of "wu-wei" and the teachings of Lao-Tzu. Whether you are a yoga teacher looking to incorporate more spiritual practices into your teaching or a yogi interested in studying the Tao, this workshop will be a powerful introduction to the practices and teaching of Sahm-Je Taoistm.

Vagus Voyage: An Embodied Tour of the Vagus Nerve and its Influence

Neural flexibility. Neural resilience. Neuroscience. If these terms seem heady, this workshop will help you embody your brain’s neural playground….your body. The vagus nerve is beloved by humans for being our chief parasympathetic (relaxation response) nerve. But new science around the influence of the vagus has shifted our understanding of parasympathetic responses. This workshop teaches you how to access the three anatomical zones innervated by the vagus nerve, and how each zone affects our state of perception and quality of being. The workshop includes novel breath-based exercises coupled with soft-tissue self-massage and positional release in order to feel the fascinating interplay of stimulating sympathetic and parasympathetic modes of being. Learn to distinguish between the myelinated and unmyelinated vagus pathways and become familiar with Polyvagal Theory. Ultimately it will help you to be more aware of your own state and help you foster a safe environment for your students.

Healing the 5 Senses, Sensory Based Immersion Practices

We are witnessing significantly higher incidence of physical and mental health decline, which can have minor to debilitating effects of quality of life. Anxiety is now the #1 actual diagnosis post-pandemic, meaning people may have sought medical help for something else then actually told their symptom is a result of anxiety.
Reconditioning the nervous system is key. Any time we improve the brain and nervous system function, we improve the biochemistry in the body, and our experience of ourselves and our lives.

Experience firsthand how Sensory-Based Immersive (SBI) practices enhance a wellness event with beneficial stimuli for all the senses! Sensory-Based Immersion spaces allow the user to find their way to a more regulated state- a combination of soothing to sensory pathways that were overstimulated, and awakening to pathways that were less receptive or underutilized.

SBI protocols help wellness experts create environments that are more friendly to a variety of neuro processing styles, and help shift a nervous system from tired and wired to calm and inspired! This heightened state of awareness, safety and receptivity allows guests of your classes and workshops to better engage in most any teaching, healing or creativity modality.

These protocols are transferable across different types of events, whether for community health, workplace wellness or incorporated into professional training and organizational gatherings.

Slackline Yoga: Starting the Long Walk

Step into the realm of intermediate slacklining with a workshop designed for those ready to expand their horizons beyond the basics. As your practice matures, you may find yourself drawn to the challenges and thrills of walking longlines, highlines, and waterlines. These disciplines share a common trait: the journey begins away from the security of the ground and requires you to move from a seated position into standing without using the ground.

In this intermediate-level workshop, we will guide you through various mounts, empowering you to start your walk on these lines with confidence and grace. Mastering the skill of entering a slackline without using ground is not just a technical achievement; it's a gateway to a whole new spectrum of poses and line practices. This pivotal skill enriches your slackline yoga journey, opening doors to previously unexplored dimensions.

Prerequisites for this transformative experience include previous participation in any of our Slackline Yoga classes or the ability to stand and/or kneel on a slackline for at least 15 seconds. This foundational knowledge ensures that you're ready to safely and effectively advance further in your slacklining.

"Slackline Yoga: Starting the Long Walk" is more than a skill-building workshop; it's a metaphor for stepping into the unknown with courage and mindfulness. Join us as we explore the art of the long walk, where each step is a blend of balance, focus, and inner strength, mirroring the deeper journey of our yoga practice.

This Is Your Brain On Yoga

Yogas citta vrtti nirodhah: yoga is the cessation of the modifications, or fluctuations, of the mind. In vedantic philosophy, every thought (vritti) leaves a “groove” or impression in the mind. Who we are, our habits, perspectives and attitudes are shaped by our environment and life experiences. In modern science, we understand this phenomenon as neuroplasticity. Yoga gives us the power to disrupt habituated patterns, effectively rewiring our brain.

Have you ever wondered why yoga makes you feel the way you do? How does a practice we do on a mat make an imprint on how we live our lives?
In this 90-minute lecture, you’ll explore the relationship between yoga and neuroscience, providing you with a new understanding of the power of yoga.
Lauren Turner, a trauma-informed yoga instructor and founder of 501(c)3 Warrior Within Yoga Project, will introduce you to the fundamentals of brain anatomy, the orchestration of the stress response, and what exactly is happening in the brain when we practice yoga.
Discussing the neurobiology of asana, pranayama and meditation, you will learn ways how to assimilate evidence-based practices that work with the nervous system, into your own practice or teaching.
A digital download, highlighting key take-aways will be provided to participants.

Intro to Y12SR: The Yoga of 12 Step Recovery

The Yoga of 12-Step Recovery (Y12SR) is a relapse prevention program that was created as a holistic model to address the physical, mental and spiritual dis-ease of addiction. Informed by the latest research in neuroscience and trauma healing, Y12SR “connects the dots” by combining the ancient wisdom and somatic approach of yoga with the cognitive approach of the most well-known addictive recovery program in the world, the 12-step recovery model.

Y12SR’s sustainable recovery program is based in the yoga sutra 2.16 ~ “Future suffering can be avoided.” There is a solution. The path and purpose of yoga and the 12-step recovery program are similar and two-fold: freedom / emancipation (from suffering) and fulfillment (to skillfully navigate through the world while thriving in every area of life).

The OM Workshop – The Yoga of Sound, Breath, Resonance & Vibration

In a yoga class, one of the first opportunities for students to connect with their teacher is through a shared “OM” but how often do we pay as much attention to the details of this sound as we do to the nuance of asana? Leslie will deconstruct the phonetics of this complex, resonant, sacred vibration with a review of the phonetic map of the mouth embedded in the Sanskrit alphabet. He will lead students in a simple chanting practice to blend exploration of the relationship between sound, physical support and movement.

YES Talk: Healing Addiction: A Yogic Perspective

Typically, the term "addiction" is associated with substance abuse. However, a more comprehensive exploration uncovers not only behavioral or process
addictions but also cultural addictions. Research highlights striking similarities between substance addiction, psychological dependencies on activities like compulsive gambling, sex, work, shopping, eating disorders, and cultural obsessions that permeate our daily lives. This expanded viewpoint indicates that addiction transcends the substance or behavior, extending to the cultural norms and practices we often overlook. In this module, we delve into the core issue of addiction, including its cultural aspects, and discuss solutions through the lens of yoga.

We begin with an Elemental Connection with the qualities of the 5 Great Elements (Earth, Water, Fire, Air, Aether) as we understand & experience them. Then draw that in from an embodied place, recognizing how each of those qualities play out within us.

From this perspective we take a Sensory-Based Immersive meditation walk up the mountain. Every step, every breath supporting the exchange of energy- the way the elements communicate from within and without.

At the top we offer our refined Selves as a collective voice of I AM, like drops of water that create vast oceans. Engaging mudra and mantra to concentrate Life Force Energy and express our desire to be active participants in the Flow of Creation, the Flow of Love.

Hanuman’s Heroes Journey and our Inner Ramayana

In this entertaining talk, Manoj illuminates Hanuman’s journey in the Ramayana and will relate it to the archetypical Hanuman energy within you. Like Hanuman we can access super human powers of wisdom, strength and service alongside deep humility and “move big Boulders”.  Learn how awakening this energy leads to explosive transformation, both within and in the outside world, be it spiritual, personal or professional.

In parallel, Manoj will guide us with stories and symbolisms of the Ramayana through the lens of Advaita Vedanta philosophy; where Lord Ram is an avatar of Consciousness (Higher Self of formless), Sita is us (lower self in form) and Hanuman is the uniter of us to Consciousness.

Hip and Low Back Health

This 90-minute workshop will investigate the dynamics of hip and lower back movement. They should move in concert. But we're often unaware of problems in the deeper layers until it's too late. We'll use movements in specific ways to uncover hidden joint rigidity and the fascia surrounding them. We want to catch the hidden problems now, so they don't become problems down the road! We'll look at typical "rules of posture" that could work against your spine and hips' long-term health and mobility. Most of all, you'll learn how to use your muscles to develop and maintain bone strength and joint health for life. In Avita Yoga shapes, we use the muscles to reach the bones. Give it a try. You'll love the freedom and peace you'll feel!

It's especially good if:

You have Chronic low back pain - from sitting, cycling, running, or hiking.
Hip pain wakes you up at night.
You've been diagnosed with arthritis or degeneration.
You are a yoga therapist or teacher wanting new ways to reach your students.
You want a way to maintain healthy hips and spine…for life!

Headstand or Sisrsana is sometimes referred to as the “King of Asana” and it stands (on its head) atop the rest.  Done well, it can be a meditative and soothing pose.  In this Hatha style workshop, you will move through a sequence of poses that compose the building blocks of a stable and confident headstand.
You will see how the components of the headstand exist within many familiar and often practiced poses, and learn the alignment principle needed to practice safely. Healing Ourselves and Our World: How Beauty, Goodness and Excellence Make us Better

Many of us already know the shifts in mood we can experience when in the presence of beauty.  What we may not know, and what research in the fields of eco- and positive psychology have demonstrated is that when we activate a mindful attention to natural beauty, moral beauty (goodness) or excellence in others, we notice much more profound benefits. These benefits range from a lift in spirits, a sense of transcendence, an openness to others, an increase in motivation to be our better selves, and a commitment to care of the planet and its species. In her presentation, Maria Sirois, shares the stories and research that illuminates the value of attention to outer and inner beauty and to excellence, and shares practices that can easily be applied in every domain of our living.

The Next Step in Slackline Yoga

Level: Intermediate
Elevate your practice to new heights with "The Next Step in Slackline Yoga," a class designed for those ready to explore the dynamic and flowing aspects of this unique discipline. The YogaSlackers have skillfully adapted over 150 traditional asanas to the slackline, and this class invites you to delve into the fluidity of moving between these poses, enriching your slackline yoga journey.
In this intermediate-level class, we focus on developing seamless transitions on the slackline, akin to the flow of a vinyasa yoga class. Here, each movement is intentionally synchronized with the breath, creating a rhythmic dance of balance and grace. This approach not only enhances physical stability but also cultivates a deep sense of presence and mindfulness.
Prerequisites for this class include either completion of any of our beginner level Slackline Yoga classes or a minimum of three months of slackline experience. This ensures that all participants have a foundational understanding of slackline yoga, allowing the class to collectively progress into more advanced flows and transitions.
This class is more than just physical practice; it's a meditative experience where breath and movement merge on the slackline. It's an opportunity to deepen your connection to yourself and the line, exploring how each transition can be an expression of balance, focus, and fluidity.
Join us in "The Next Step in Slackline Yoga" and discover the beauty of flowing transitions,or new poses, where each step and shift on the line becomes a part of a larger, harmonious sequence, embodying the essence of vinyasa in the realm of slackline yoga.

Unlock Your Inner Voice with the Yoga of Voice

Prana moves through the body with breath. When we add the vibration of sound we amplify our ability to experience that prana. The result is that we feel more energized, enlivened and embodied. By activating the audible voice we awaken our ability to voice feelings, needs and our own truth. The more comfortable we become with our own sound the more comfortable we become expressing ourselves to the world. That is our right—and our responsibility. At this moment in time, it’s imperative. In this practice we’ll utilize breath, movement, asana, chanting and improvisational sound to cultivate a greater connection to the voice within and, therefore, to a greater sense of presence, power and peace.

Trauma-Informed Kundalini Yoga for Deep Release & Relaxation

We all know how difficult it can be to ease into the art of relaxation. We spend so much time in a state of chasing what is next, hustle culture and perceiving we must earn our right to be here. What if we are released into the awareness that we are perfect? What if there is no reason for “self-help” or “self-improvement”? What if we just shed the layers of stress that keep us confined in fear, false personality and identity?
In this Trauma Informed Kundalini Yoga session, we will surrender to the universal truth that radiance, happiness, and divinity are a part of who we really are. Underneath the layers of false stories we find our True Identity, our Sat Nam, and there we recognize that we are both a work in progress AND a masterpiece.
No kundalini experience required. This is suitable for all practitioners, and pregnant people are welcome. Wear comfortable clothes and bring water.

Developing a Strong Spiritual Core

The latest neuroscience research shows that people with a strong "spiritual core" experience less anxiety and depression than those that don't. But what do we mean by a "strong spiritual core?" And how does yoga help someone develop it?

You'll often hear people say that yoga is "spiritual but not religious." Yet, it's not always clear what distinguishes one from the other or what either has to do with a breathing and moving practice.

In this workshop, J. Brown will offer simple practice and facilitate discussion around different philosophical viewpoints and the notion of a higher power in the context of yoga. This will include the relationship between meditation and prayer, soul and creator, intuition, and ways in which we might develop receptivity and direction.

Tantra Yoga: Align with Nature’s Way and Yoga Nidra

Tantra means “loom,” like a weaver’s loom, where you weave back together the various threads of yourself –
body, mind, and heart with the infinite, unbounded, universal spirit. Tantra is the recognition that you are
already enough and worthy just as you are. Practice a sequence of gentle asanas (standing poses, hip openers,
twists, and forward bends) leading to Yoga Nidra (yogic sleep), a deep, guided, ecstatic relaxation perfect for
ending your day.
During this class, you
  •  Align with nature’s way through the five elements (Earth, Water, Fire, Air, and Sky)
  •  Quiet the mind and cultivate deep inner peace through Yoga Nidra (yogic sleep)
  •  Receive hands-on adjustments to improve your alignment technique

The Warrior Series - A Hands-Free Vinyasa Practice

If you like a strong, flowing, breath-centered yoga practice, but have done more than a few too many down dogs, up dogs and chaturangas, then this is the class for you. This practice-heavy workshop will lead you through a specially-designed vinyasa that strongly works the legs and moves the spine in all possible directions, all without putting any body weight on your hands.
This session can be extended into two parts, with part one focusing on the relationship of breath to movement, while introducing the basic movement principles of the sequence. Additionally, the use of breath cueing to achieve alignment and safety objectives will be covered through exploring individual adaptation and modification.
Building on the basics covered in part one, part two covers the full sequence of poses in the Warrior Series with an emphasis on the details of alignment. In particular, we will experiment with how to individualize breath and asana cueing for groups of any size, as well as how to modify the practice for individual therapeutic objectives. The vinyasa will be practiced twice, the first time flowing through non-stop, and the second time breaking down the myriad possibilities for individual adaptation.

Meditation is Everything

For thousands of years the word “yoga” was synonymous with meditation.  Every step on the classical 8 limbed path of yoga is intended to help prepare the mind for meditation thru training in concentration.  Meditation is not contemplation, or “thinking about things,” or even stopping thought.  Thoughts are not the enemy.  Meditation is not a spooky or an empty or spaced out state of mind.  It is simply a place of clear, undistracted and non-judgmental attention to whatever it is that is going on in consciousness - in this moment - whether pleasant or unpleasant. Mindfulness meditation does not require that we adopt any cultural affectations or beliefs.  It simply asks us to pay attention to the flow of experience in each moment.  Join Beryl and the sangha for mindfulness practice and find support in developing a well formed habit of attention and daily practice.

The Yoga of the Foot: How To Be A Better Biped

As mammals of the genus homo, we have been walking erect for about 2 million years. Yet, in what amounts to an evolutionary blink of an eye, natural organic ground has literally been pulled out from under us, as we have leveled, paved, and otherwise smoothed out the unpredictable terrain our feet evolved upon. Add to this insult the injury of restrictive footwear and we in the industrialized world have an epidemic of physical ills that can be traced back to our compromised foundations.
This workshop will delve deeply into the history, structure, function and retraining of our feet as the foundation for a healthy asana practice and for living more fully functional lives as happy bipeds.

Yoga for Pain

Yoga practices can be used for different purposes. Some people use practice for fitness. Some people are looking for transcendence. But, more and more, people are coming to yoga to address their pain. It could be either physical or mental pain, usually both.

The way yoga practice helps us address pain is not the same way we might practice for other purposes. Many conventional approaches unsuccessfully attempt to do both and often leave students ill equipped to develop effective personal practice that meets their needs.

In this workshop, J will examine the distinguishing characteristics of yoga practice that is geared towards a lessening of pain and developing individual agency. We will identify both the technical and philosophical aspects that determine both the experience we have, and results we receive.

Mystical Yoga: The Path to Liberation Through Magick, Alchemy, and Ritual

Magick, often described as the art of channeling energy at will, is precisely what unfolds when we unite in movement, breath, and prayer within the realm of yoga.
In this transformative journey, our daily practice becomes an alchemical process wherein we transmute the confines of our body and mind into boundless expansion. It empowers us to transcend our limiting beliefs and transfigure the leaden weight of fear into the golden wisdom that resides within us.
As we engage in this potent and purposeful approach, yoga transcends mere exercise—it becomes a sacred ritual, a holy dance with the divine, a tangible expression of our devotion, and a cosmic act of service. It serves as an amplifier for our commitment to healing ourselves, one another, and our precious planet in our quest for peace.
Join me for a very special, powerful, and illuminating event, where we will harmonize our intentions and utilize the power of our bodies to awaken the energies that guide us toward wholeness and freedom.
This soul-stirring class will encompass a variety of practices, including sun salutations A and B, standing postures, backbends, forward bends, inversions, meditation, contemplation, mantra, mudra, and heartfelt prayer.

Designed with both beginners and intermediate practitioners in mind, this class is a journey of discovery. Beginners will find a supportive and engaging environment to explore the basics of the flow, focusing on the gentle art of movement and connection.

Four Tenets of Transformational Hands-On-Assists

This workshop is geared for yoga teachers or fitness professionals who work with individuals in group-class or one-on-one settings.
One of the main goals of yoga is to improve the flow of prana (energy or life-force) in the body. We use yoga asanas to help improve prana flow. Sometimes our students can’t access that state in their postures due to many factors.  A kind and compassionate hands-on-assist can facilitate the flow energy in the body by:
  • providing stability
  • creating grounding
  • creating space in the body
  • helping improve breath.
In this hands-on experiential workshop, we will learn the four main principles that will take your hands-on-assists to the next level and help your students experience postures in a whole new way.
We will learn to recognise when and where prana is restricted in the body in various asanas and learn the methods in which we can help improve prana flow with hands-on-assists. When prana is unlocked, the students can experience each pose in a more enjoyable, beneficial as well as more safe manner.
We will discuss student consent, approach, as well as how to use your hands with kindness and compassion for the health and wellness of your students. All of us are healers, we just need to fine-tune our senses and learn the power of our healing touch.
